The Black Vote's Irony

Does anyone else find it ironic that the African-Americans of this
country finally break down some barriers and help elect a black
president only to overwhelmingly take away the rights of gays?

They say nearly 70 percent of those blacks that voted for Barack voted
yes on amendment 2:

[...]70 percent – of black voters in California ...voted for Proposition 8 and helped secure its passage, according to exit polling conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
[...]
Latinos were 18 percent of California's voters, and through sheer numbers also contributed to Proposition 8's success. But 53 percent of Latino voters supported the measure, a much lower percentage than black voters. Among white and Asian voters, 49 percent voted for the measure.

Every race obviously voted 'no' on it as well; though blacks disproportionately did in comparison.  (70% as
compared to around 49-55 percent of the other races.)  That's why this
comes up.  It's worth asking 'why' this is so.

I'm sure some have their reasons, but I'd like to hear them.  No doubt it has much to do with religion.

Update:  Just read this post that mentions the Mormon church bankrolling the cause for passing prop. 8 (to the tune of 25 million). There are many saying the church ought to lose their tax-exempt status, but I don't see that happening.  There's got to be some 'rational' explanation/loophole.

A protest in front of the Mormon temple in Los Angeles was obviously in order.  I'm sure there will be more stories like this trickling in.
